# UK Profile Guidance

**Open this area:** In the CORTEX menu, select **Assurance & governance → Preservation & archive**.

Open the profile adopted by your workflow and inspect its jurisdiction, editions, and unresolved coverage.

**Who uses this:** Requirement owner, Collector, Analyst, Author, Reviewer, Recipient, Administrator.\
**Open in CORTEX:** `/governance/profiles`.\
**In-app guide:** `/help?topic=uk-profile-guidance`.

**Expected result:** You distinguish the original decision context from later source or profile changes.

## Before you start

* Open a workflow you are authorised to read. Its Effective UK profile panel retains the adopted revision.
* Exact guidance additionally requires current corpus read access and handling scope. An absent profile remains Legacy / unassigned.

## What to do

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

## Follow the retained context

Open Effective UK profile and choose Guidance for this exact profile and source editions. The link carries the original revision and integrity hash. From profile history, each revision has its own guidance link.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

## Check jurisdiction

Read the retained scope and variants. England/Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are distinct policing contexts. An England/Wales APP catalogue supplies no interchangeable Scottish authority; separately reviewed applicability is required.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

## Inspect editions

Read the retained probability and evaluation editions and controlled terminology, including historical aliases. The source list identifies the exact source revision, edition, authority, rights note and locator used by the profile.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

## Review changes

A historical profile is labelled explicitly. Follow current source/rights review and profile history to assess supersession and outstanding inputs. Current approval never rewrites the original context.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

## Continue the task

Return to the original workflow to make an authorised decision. Follow the linked task guides for correction. If source access has changed, ask the responsible manager; do not substitute another jurisdiction or an unreviewed profile.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

## Check the result

* Am I viewing the revision actually adopted by this record?
* Does its jurisdiction match the task?
* Are source rights, missing inputs and older wording clear?

## If you get stuck

<details>

<summary>Why is the link unavailable?</summary>

Current corpus access or handling may no longer permit the profile. Reopen its link from an authorised workflow or ask the corpus manager. The page does not fall back to a different or current revision.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Why does an old profile still show an earlier term?</summary>

Historical terminology is part of the retained decision. A new edition needs reviewed adoption and any deliberate reassessment; changing help cannot silently migrate a judgement.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Can I assume all sources are reviewed?</summary>

No. Read coverage, outstanding inputs and each source's current review. Restricted or unsupplied material remains unresolved; a link is not permission to copy its body.

## Responsibility and limits

* A metadata registration, help page or approved profile is not a full compliance claim.
* Application guidance is curated software documentation. Legal, professional and organisational decisions remain with authorised people; old workflow hashes and released bytes stay unchanged.

**Reference and scope:** The workflow's retained UK profile and requirement/source revisions are the applicable context. General task guidance is not a substitute for their reviewed scope.
